In the spring of 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina plunged into a war that would end in the winter of 1995.
Bosnian cities – including Zavidovići which was a center of the wood industry – suffered wartime economic violence, criminal trafficking, industrial and environmental destruction. After the first post-war years marked by a certain optimism toward the “transition”, which was supposed to bring democratic consolidation and economic growth, people began to leave again. Today Bosnia and Herzegovina is in an economic and social stagnation, some areas are among the most polluted in Europe, and it has one of the highest emigration rates in the world. On the other hand, BiH is the country where a significant portion of migrants pass through.
The paradigmatic condition of Bosnia brings into focus phenomena that are only seemingly distant from each other, but in fact intersect in a common political historical framework in which conflicts, violence, power logics, and resistance are intertwined and referenced in the global space of the contemporary world.
Enrico Carpegna’s portraits of “resistant” figures and “post-industrial” landscapes are a glimpse into that condition.
